Polly Wolly Doodle

Last evening I was watching TCM (Turner Classic Movies) It is one of my favorite movie stations. I love the classics. A great old black and white was on. "You Can't Take It With You" 1938 Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur, James Stewart. A delightful comedy about young love.
Frank Capra's 1938 populist spin on the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play about a family of happy eccentrics is a great deal of fun!
An eccentric patriarch (Lionel Barrymore) meets the stuffy parents of his granddaughter's (Jean Arthur) fiance (James Stewart).
I love one of the very last scenes where they are in the house singing and dancing. It is so delightful. It makes you want to get up and dance and sing with them. They sang one of the songs I remember my mom sing to us children when we were young.
It brought back warm memories of my childhood.
I found the words to this delightful childhood song that mom use to sing to us. I had to even call her and ask her if she remembered the song and the words. She remembered the song. But not all the words. She will be delighted to know I found the words. So i plan on sending her a copy to her. I know she will love it and will bring warm memories of a time gone by. I'm so glad I found the words. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did. If you get a chance to see the movie please do it. it is a delight!

Play Song
....
Oh, I went down South
For to see my Sal
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
My Sal, she is
A spunky gal
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Oh, my Sal, she is
A maiden fair
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
With curly eyes
And laughing hair
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Behind the barn,
Down on my knees
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
I thought I heard
A chicken sneeze
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

He sneezed so hard
With the whooping cough
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
He sneezed his head
And the tail right off
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Oh, a grasshopper sittin'
On a railroad track
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
A-pickin' his teeth
With a carpet tack
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Oh, I went to bed
But it wasn't any use
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
My feet stuck out
Like a chicken roost
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Fare thee well,
Fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy fay
For I'm going to Lou'siana
For to see my Susyanna
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day

Good to hear the words of that song again. I remember it very well from my childhood, and that's over here in England! I love old black & white movies as well. Wonderful!
